Argentinean baritone Germán Enrique Alcántara is making his name as a Verdi interpreter: in April 2024 he recorded Simon Boccanegra in the original 1857 version for Opera Rara, performed in concert in Manchester with the Hallé Orchestra conducted by Sir Mark Elder, in October 2024 he debuted the role of Rigoletto at Welsh National Opera, in November 2024 Renato in Un ballo in maschera at Teatro Colon Buenos Aires, in 2025 he debuted Rodrigue in Don Carlos, Germont in La traviata, Miller in Luisa Miller.
He is a graduate of Jette Parker Young Artist Programme of Royal Opera House London, where he appeared in many productions and brought him to international limelight in 2022, when he performed the Count of Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro under the baton of Sir Antonio Pappano, the production later broadcast in cinemas around the world and also released on DVD.
He studied at the School of Music in Misiones, at the National University of Cuyo-Mendoza, at the Maîtrise de Notre-Dame de Paris (under Rosa Dominguez) and the Reina Sofía School of Music in Madrid (with Ryland Davies). He has been awarded in many international singing competitions, including 1st Prize as baritone at “Jose Carreras Grand Prix” 2021 of the Elena Obraztsova Foundation in Moscow, 3rd Prize along with Audience Prize, “Amics de l’Òpera de Sabadell” Prize and “Concert at Teatro Real” Prize at “Tenor Viñas” 2021 Competition in Barcelona, Golden Medal with high distinction at the 5th Manhatan International Competition in 2020.
His recording and role debut as Simon Boccanegra on Opera Rara’s world premiere studio recording release of the original 1857 version of the opera, has been picked as one of the Best Classical Albums of 2025 by The New York Times, The Arts Desk, The Times and Gramophone, received nominations from the Gramophone Classical Music Awards, International Opera Awards and the International Classical Music Awards. In December 2025, Presto Music awarded Germán with the award for ‘Recording Debut of the Year’ in recognition of his achievements with this release.
