Ivan Magrì has established himself with great acclaim on the most prestigious stages in Italy and abroad, with a wide repertoire ranging from bel canto roles such as Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore and Arturo in I puritani, to lyric tenor roles such as Alfredo in La traviata and Rodolfo in La bohème, and dramatic roles such as Radamès in Aida and Calaf in Turandot.
After his stage debut in 2006 as Ernesto in Don Pasquale, in the following seasons he had a series of important debuts both in Italy and abroad, as L’elisir d’amore at the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome and the Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto at the Teatro Regio in Turin in 2011, Rigoletto at the Palau de les Arts in Valencia with Omer Wellber in 2012; again Rigoletto at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin in 2013; La traviata at the Staatsoper in Berlin and Luisa Miller (Rodolfo) directed by Damiano Michieletto at the Opernhaus in Zurich in 2014.
Highlights of his career include L’elisir d’amore and Rigoletto at the Royal Opera in London; La bohème at the Houston Grand Opera; Rigoletto, Madama Butterfly and Nabucco at the Vienna State Opera; La traviata at La Scala, Bavarian State Opera in Munich, Teatro San Carlo di Napoli, Teatro La Fenice di Venezia and Teatro Real de Madrid, conducted by Nicola Luisotti; Il trovatore and Aida at the Staatsoper in Berlin; Rigoletto and Luisa Miller at Staatsoper Hamburg, both directed by Andreas Homoki; La traviata conducted by Zubin Mehta at Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Palau de les Arts in Valenccia and with the Israel Philharmonic in Tel Aviv; Rigoletto again with Maestro Mehta at Maggio Musicale Fiorentino; Nabucco at Verdi Festival of Teatro Regio in Parma; I puritani at Teatro Comunale di Bologna; Virginia by Mercadante at the Wexford Festival; Donizetti’s Maria di Rudenz at Donizetti Festival in Bergamo; Roméo et Juliette at Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari; Faust at the Greek National Opera in Athens; Luisa Miller at Glyndebourne Festival, directed by Christof Loy and conducted by Enrique Mazzola; Tosca at Tokyo Spring Festival and Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago; L’elisir d’amore at Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires; La bohème and Faust at Opera Australia in Sydney.
Born in Catania, he began studying singing under the guidance of Domenica Monti, before graduating with top marks from the Verdi Conservatory in Milan in 2005, under the guidance of Giovanna Canetti and Wilma Borelli. He had also the privilege to receive valuable advice from the great Luciano Pavarotti.
