“Germán Enrique Alcántara’s Miller was one of the great success of the cast. This outstanding baritone possesses a lyrical voice endowed with that dramatic bite which is required of a first-rate Verdian.”

(on El Pais about Luisa Miller with Sir Mark Elder at Les Arts, Valencia)

Argentine baritone Germán Enrique Alcántara is rapidly establishing himself as a leading Verdi interpreter. Recent seasons have seen a series of major Verdi role debuts, including Miller in Luisa Miller at Palau de les Arts in Valencia, the title role of Rigoletto at Welsh National Opera, Renato in Un ballo e Maschera at Teatro Colón, Posa in Don Carlos (French version) and Giorgio Germont in La traviata at Theater Kiel. In March 2024, Alcántara made his recording and role debut as the title role of Simon Boccanegra in Opera Rara’s world premiere studio recording of Verdi’s original 1857 version. The album was named, among other accolades, one of The New York Times’s Best Classical Albums of the Year, and at the 2025 Presto Music Awards, Alcántara received the award for “Recording Debut of the Year”.

A graduate of Jette Parker Young Artist Programme of Royal Ballet & Opera in London, at the Covent Garden he appeared in many productions and reached the international limelight in 2022, when he performed the Count of Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro under the baton of Sir Antonio Pappano, the production broadcast in cinemas around the world and also released on DVD. Later he has been invited back by the Royal Ballet & Opera as Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor and as Marcello in La bohème.

Highlights of recent seasons include Alcántara’s Spanish main-stage debut as Kyoto in Mascagni’s Iris at Teatro Real de Madrid, Riccardo Forth in I puritani at Teatro Colón de Buenos Aires, the title role of Wainwright’s Hadrian at the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto; Piazzolla’s Maria de Buenos Aires at Oper Köln, the US debut as Don Giovanni at San Diego Opera, Manfredo in Mercadante’s Il Giuramento at Klangvokal Musikfestival Dortmund and Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor at Deutsche Oper Berlin.

After completing his early education in his home country, he moved to Paris in 2014 to study under Rosa Dominguez at the Maîtrise de Notre-Dame de Paris and then to Madrid in 2016, to study under Ryland Davies at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofia for two years. He has been awarded in many international singing competitions, 3rd Prize overall along with Audience Prize, “Amics de l’Òpera de Sabadell” Prize and “Concert at Teatro Real” Prize at “Tenor Viñas” 2021 Competition in Barcelona.

In spring 2027, his debut recital album, “Cantares”, will be released: songs from Argentina, on IBS Classical with his long-time collaborator, pianist Knut Jacques. A deep exploration of his musical heritage, the album includes, among other works, the first-ever recordings of Julio Perceval’s song cycle Cantares de Cuyo and Anna Carrique’s song cycle Coplas Puntanas.
